I set out to illustrate the ways in which we respond to one another on social media (liking, commenting, sharing) and how social media has changed the ways in which we respond to one another (anonymity). The need for response has appeared with the increased use of social media and has turned into an addiction for validation.
My aim was to create an eye-catching, provocative magazine cover and fold-out info graphic that informs and entertains the viewer regarding society’s growning need for social validation. The infographic will illustrate various statistical information related to social media response.
I created the image using denim fabric. I incorporated denim to symbolize the way that social media is becoming part of our daily lives and reconizable as normal for a large majority of the first world population.
I played with scale and purposely used and oversized ‘like’ symbol. I wanted the symbol to overshadow the woman and demonstate the power it had over her. One of the reasons I didn’t use two people in the image is that I was unable to show the thumbs-up large enough to really make an impact.
As the ‘like’ symbol was my central image for this project, I worked it into the infographic. I experimented with text inside and outside of the image and felt it didn’t work with the texture of the denim to place the text inside.
Wired has recently overhauled their design. In following with their changes, I based my cover layout on several recent issues, using actual article titles as well as my original artical headline.
